Just as the 1st Day of Spring will soon to be here, so will Kick Butts Day. Both of these happen to fall on March 20th this year. Kick Butts Day is a day and an opportunity to empower youth to take a stand against tobacco and to stay tobacco free. Many student advocacy groups across the country will celebrate this day by organizing an event in their community to educate and empower other youth to stay tobacco free. Here locally, some student advocacy groups have recognized this event in previous years by hosting Kick Butts Day kickball tournaments with younger students or their peers. These kickball tournaments have been well received. They offer an opportunity for students to have fun together, while being able to provide education about the importance of staying tobacco free. There are many other ways that students can recognize this day. ISTEP (Iowa Students for Tobacco Education and Prevention) has put together some great resources for groups to use as they see fit for their community. These resources can be found on the ISTEP website at www.iowastep.org/events. Students groups are also encouraged to take photos and share their events on social media. Share and follow these events with the following hashtags: #KBD2019 #KickButtsDay #CelebrateISTEP #IowaSTEP #ISTEP.
This day is also a great opportunity for anyone thinking about quitting tobacco use to take advantage of Quitline Iowa. This program is a free, statewide toll-free telephone coaching service dedicated to helping improve the health and well-being of Iowans. To learn more about all of their services or to enroll into their program, please visit www.quitlineiowa.org or call 1-800-QUIT-NOW. Take the next step and “Kick Butts” today!
